Zimbabwe Cricket has confirmed the appointment of former international cricketer Gary Ballance as a consultant coach ahead of their upcoming four-day Test match against England, scheduled for later this month in Nottingham.

This will be Zimbabwe’s first red-ball appearance in England since 2003, making it a historic and symbolic fixture for the nation’s cricket revival.

👤 Who is Gary Ballance?

  • Born in Zimbabwe, Ballance represented England in 23 Tests between 2014 and 2017, averaging 37.45.
  • He later returned to play for Zimbabwe in 2023 after switching international allegiance under ICC rules.
  • His dual-nationality experience, especially his deep familiarity with English conditions, is viewed as a valuable asset for Zimbabwe’s young squad.

🎯 Role and Expectations

Ballance has been brought in on a short-term consultancy basis to:

  • Assist with batting strategy and technical preparation
  • Mentor young Zimbabwean players ahead of a challenging tour
  • Help the team acclimate to English pitches and seam movement

🗣️ ZC Statement:

“We’re thrilled to have Gary on board. His experience in England, both as a player and now mentor, is exactly what our players need in such a demanding environment.”

🏏 Zimbabwe’s Upcoming Fixture:

  • Match: Zimbabwe vs England (Unofficial Test)
  • Date: May 23–26, 2025
  • Venue: Trent Bridge, Nottingham
  • Format: Four-day match (non-WTC)

This fixture is part of Zimbabwe’s effort to reintegrate into Test cricket, following years of limited bilateral red-ball matches due to financial and political challenges.

📈 A Step Forward for Zimbabwe Cricket

With renewed backing from ICC development funds and strong domestic performances from emerging talents like Milton Shumba and Richard Ngarava, Zimbabwe is hoping to regain a competitive foothold in international cricket.

Ballance’s involvement signals a push toward professionalization and tactical discipline, particularly in overseas conditions.
